Richard Bergeron officially elected to council after recount

The leader of Projet Montréal, Richard Bergeron, has been officically elected in the Saint-Jacques district of the Ville-Marie borough after a recount was requested by Team Denis Coderre.

Though Bergeron lost his mayoral bid, his candidate designate, Janine Krieber, initially won by 81 votes against Team Denis Coderre's Philippe Schnobb.

Yves Saindon, the Returning Officer for Montreal, said the recount put the victor ahead by only 36 votes.

Initially, Krieber obtained 2,294 votes, or 29.26 per cent of the vote, while Schnobb, received 2203 votes, or 28.10 per cent of the vote.

Team Denis Coderre had asked for a judicial recount, alleging several irregularities.

After the recount, Schnobb said he was disappointed with the result but praised Bergeron for his election.

The Projet Montréal leader said he does not plan to run in the next municipal election, but will stay on as party leader for the next year or two.

Bergeron is scheduled to be sworn in this afternoon.
