Heavy snow in parts of central and southern Alberta caused multiple collisions and RCMP warned motorists to exercise caution.
A winter storm warning was issued for Red Deer and Drumheller and snowfall warnings for parts of central and southern Alberta.
RCMP were called to a single vehicle rollover on Highway 43, near Valleyview on Friday. The man in the vehicle, its only occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene. Adverse weather and road conditions were factors in the rollover, RCMP say.
Two crashes near Crossfield, involving as many as 30 vehicles, blocked traffic in both directions, bringing the highway to a standstill, CTV News reports.
In Calgary, 160 crashed were reported by 11 a.m. and nine involved minor injuries, the Calgary Herald reports.
Edmonton issued a season parking ban for Sunday morning to allow for easier plowing of major roadways.
RCMP advised motorists to avoid Highway 1 east of Calgary all the way to Brooks, and Highway 2 both north and southbound from Calgary to Edmonton, due to extremely poor road conditions and visibility.
A low pressure system over southern Alberta will provide an additional five to 10 centimetres of snow on Saturday, with heavy snow expected to taper off in the afternoon, according to Environment Canada.
