Const. Raphael Bergeron said the accident happened yesterday at 5:15 p.m. at the corner of Perras Boulevard and Elie-Beauregard Avenue.
Police said a woman who was pushing her 18-month-old son in a stroller was crossing the street, and it’s possible the driver didn’t see them.
The 56-year-old driver stopped at the stop sign and continued on, hitting the child.
“Basically she dragged the baby for about 10 metres before she realized that something happened,” Bergeron said.
The driver didn’t stop until the mother banged on the car to get her attention.
Bergeron said several witnesses rushed over to help free the trapped child.
“A group of people came … and lifted up the vehicle to get the baby out.”
The child was rushed to hospital, and both the mother and driver were treated for shock.
The child's mother was not hurt.
Bergeron said it’s too early to say whether the driver will face charges.
“It could just be a sad accident,” he said.
