Four Rooms, Recipe to Riches join CBC-TV lineup

A show crossing Dragons' Den with Antiques Roadshow and a TV cooking contest judged by Canadian celebrity chef Vikram Vij are among the new offerings coming from CBC-TV this winter.

The public broadcaster unveiled details of its upcoming season of television programming in Toronto on Wednesday.

Four Rooms, hosted by CBC's Reshmi Nair, is one of the additions.

A high-stakes take on the Antiques Roadshow format that's been given a sleek Dragons' Den-style makeover, the show calls on the Canadian public to bring unique collectibles they believe are worth a fortune — say a game-worn Wayne Gretzky hockey jersey or a personal letter signed by Catcher in the Rye author J.D. Salinger — to a quartet of tough-talking buyers. The question at hand: to sell or no deal?

Joining Nair on the show, which debuts in January, are buyers Derreck Martin, Eddy Rogo, Jessica Lindsay Phillips and Scott Landon.

Also joining the primetime lineup in January is the federal politics satire The Best Laid Plans, a six-part miniseries starring Jonas Chernick and based on the popular, award-winning novel by Terry Fallis.

Debuting in late February is cooking competition Recipe to Riches, hosted by actor Carlo Rota and featuring amateur Canadian cooks vying to turn their personal recipes into national favourites. Five category winners will be created as products for sale in grocery stores, while the publicly chosen grand prize-winner receives $250,000.

The latest edition of the televised contest will be judged by popular chef and Vancouver restaurateur Vikram Vij, Arlene Dickinson of Dragons' Den and culinary expert and food writer Gail Simmons.

The network has also teamed with the NHL, NHLPA and NBC for a new sports offering: the seven-part series NHL Revealed: A Season Like No Other, slated to begin in late January.

CBC is also the official Canadian broadcaster of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, which will dominate programming in February.
