EDMONTON - Police in Edmonton are searching for a suspect after a dog was shot in the head by an intruder.

Officers discovered the animal when they responded to a report that someone was trying to break into a home in the city's west end.

Two people in the house were not injured.

Police say the dog is in critical condition at an emergency veterinary clinic.

They say they do not believe the break-in was random.

Two weeks ago, a pit bull was severely injured while protecting its owner during a robbery east of downtown.
