CARBONEAR, N.L. - The Opposition Liberals have won a provincial byelection in eastern Newfoundland.

Carbonear Mayor Sam Slade won the riding of Carbonear-Harbour Grace, which was held by the governing Conservatives until last month when then finance minister Jerome Kennedy stepped down and left politics.

With all of the polls reporting, Slade received 2.769 votes, just ahead of Conservative challenger Jack Harrington with 2,313.

Harrington was Kennedy's former constituency assistant.

NDP candidate Charlene Sudbrink — a musician and local activist — received 410 votes.

The standings in the house of assembly are 35 Progressive Conservatives, eight Liberals, three New Democrats and two Independents.
