Canadian charities embrace 'Giving Tuesday'

Charities across Canada are jumping on Giving Tuesday, a concept started last year in the United States in response to the consumer-focused Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

More than 1,000 charities across the country are encouraging online donations and volunteering commitments today.

"Everyone wants to get out and get those great deals, but we have to remember that the season is about us giving back,” said Angela Anderson, a spokeswoman for the Calgary Chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

"And maybe we can look at our communities and figure out one little way to give back during the holiday season."

The charitable concept started last year in the United States.

According to the Canadian website, Giving Tuesday is a “day where charities, companies and individuals join together to share commitments, rally for favourite causes and think about others.”
