On Monday night, around 10 p.m., Longueuil police responded to multiple phone calls from residents complaining about a man and woman fighting outside on David Street in the old Longueuil district.
When police arrived, officers said they found a man in an agitated state.
Officers also reported that it appeared as though the man had struck the woman with a sharp object.
The circumstances that followed remain unclear, but police have confirmed that an officer opened fire and hit the man.
Both the man and the woman were transported to the Charles LeMoyne Hospital in Longueueil. They are expected to recover.
A female police officer was also taken to hospital for shock.
The Sûreté du Québec has now opened an investigation. It is standard practice for an outside police agency to take over an investigation in Quebec when someone is injured or killed during a police intervention.
