Rob Ford can't win - even in football

Football has played a well-known role in the current Rob Ford mayoralty.

From his weekdays coaching high school games to his frequent visits to the sidelines of professional fields, the mayor has made pigskin a centrepiece of his tenure.

With his weekly appearance on a Washington, D.C., sports radio station, Ford now can talk about his favourite sport among experts. (He said his football knowledge was undisputed, and he knew more than any of the Toronto City Hall press gallery reporters.)

So how well did the mayor do picking winners in the NFL last weekend? Here’s his record in detail:

Kansas City Chiefs at Washington Redskins

What Ford said: "I'm taking Washington at home. I’m really worried about Griffin’s knee…they should get him healed up. But Washington’s tough at home, they’re getting 3.5 points, I’ll take Washington."

What happened: The first place Chiefs whipped the team with the controversial name by a tally of 45-10.

Indianapolis Colts at Cincinnati Bengals

What Ford said: "That’s gonna be too close. I think it’s gonna be a field-goal game. Cincy’s good at home, but you know what? I’ll take Indy with 5.5 [the point spread]. Give me Indy."

What happened: The Bengals scored early and often — never trailing in the game — and thumped the Colts 42-28.

Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers

What Ford said: "I’ll take San Francisco at home. Seattle’s got (the division) wrapped up. I don’t even know if they’ll be playing all their starters.…when San Francisco turns it on they’re good, so I’ll take San Francisco."

What happened: San Francisco, the underdog in this game, pulled out a victory. Score one for the mayor.

Detroit Lions at Philadelphia Eagles

What Ford said: "Philly’s red hot. They’re at home. Detroit plays good at home but on the road I don’t see it. I’ll take Philly."

What happened: Ford was dead-on here. The Eagles triumphed in a snow-covered game 34-20.

Tennessee Titans at Denver Broncos

What Ford said: "Denver’s a good team and they’re good at home. I just think 12 [points spread] is too much. They might win by nine or 10 but that’s too many points to give."

What happened: Ford was right with the victor — the Broncos won — but mucked up the spread. The final score was a 51-28 blowout, well above the margin Ford said they would not win by.

Dallas Cowboys at Chicago Bears

What Ford said: "It’s cold in Chicago and it’s hard to play outside when you’re a dome team I find. I’ll take Chicago at home for sure."

What happened: The Bears outscored the Cowboys 45-28. Mark another for Ford.

Buffalo Bills at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

What Ford said: He didn’t actually have time to provide analysis of this game — on air, anyway — but he went with the Bills.

What happened: The Bills lost 6-27 in Tampa.

Ford’s record this week: 3 for 7
