It’s not cruise ship season in B.C. yet, but big ships are big summer business in Victoria.
That business is so big now, that a group is proposing Canada’s first urban gondola to connect tourists from the terminal at Ogden Point to the Inner Harbour.
The gondola would be capable of transporting thousands of passengers an hour for $10 per trip.
However, some worry it’ll be an eyesore.
With every ship that docks in Victoria, roughly 3,000 passengers and 1,500 crew arrive in the capital, and most are shuttled via bus to and from their destination.
The proposed gondola would consist of fourteen towers, twenty-two metres high, linked by cables.
The gondola would be capable of moving up to 2,800 people an hour, in both directions.
Manufacturing costs are estimated somewhere between $10 and $12 million.
The concept will be presented at two open house meetings scheduled for Wednesday.
