A Shepherd-cross dog is lucky to be alive in what the BC SPCA calls "one of the most horrific animal cruelty cases" it has ever witnessed.

The Port Hardy RCMP found 18-month-old Molly thin and shivering on her owner's porch, with a collar embedded in her neck on Nov. 25, said a SPCA news release.

UPDATE: The BC SPCA has received "overwhelming support from the public," the organization's chief enforcement officer Marcie Moriarty told Global News. Over 5,000 people have signed a change.org petition requesting Molly's owners face the maximum animal cruelty penalty in B.C. if convicted.

The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital in the area where staff administered emergency treatment and removed the collar. She was later taken to Nanaimo, where she received additional care and is now recovering in a SPCA foster home.

Animal Cruelty Charges Laid In Port Hardy Case

"She has gained some weight and is now able to walk, but she is still extremely emaciated," Marcie Moriarty, the BC SPCA's chief prevention and enforcement officer, said in a statement.

Molly faces a long recovery process but staff are hopeful that she can be nursed back to health. The dog will remain in foster care for several weeks before she is placed in a new home.

The BC SPCA will recommend charges of animal cruelty against her former owners.
