A violent accident between a truck and a semi trailer on Calgary's Glenmore Trail Wednesday evening killed one toddler and left another injured.

Just a week before Christmas, a mother and her two sons were travelling eastbound along Glenmore Trail near Deerfoot Trail, when the woman lost control of her pickup truck, sending the truck flying across the median and striking the front of a transport truck.

According to the Calgary Sun, the youngest child, believed to be one or two-years-old, was rushed to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

The older boy, believed to be between three and four-years-old, was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition. The Calgary Herald reports he has several broken bones and was undergoing an MRI scan Wednesday evening.

The mother, according to Global News, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux told Global News emergency crews rushed to the scene, but nothing could be done to save the youngest boy's life.

“In this case every effort was made, there were no delays fortunately,” he said.

“Regrettably, that did not change the outcome but we know that we did the absolute best that we could.”

Calgary Police Insp. Jay Judin told the Calgary Sun weather may have been a factor in the crash. Calgary roads were covered in snow Wednesday and plowed snow pushed up against the median may have acted as a ramp for the truck.

“Normally those barriers are sufficient to stop vehicles from going over … they are designed and constructed to ensure that doesn’t happen.”
