Emergency crews were called to the BFI Canada recycling facility on Bluegrass Drive in Rocky View County around 7:20 a.m. MT Friday after staff discovered the body.
Authorities are not releasing the name or age of the victim, but say it was not a workplace accident. The body was transported to the site by a recycling truck, say police.
"It has been determined that waste collection taken to the facility was from within the city, therefore, the Calgary Police Service homicide unit will take lead with the case," said Calgary police in a release.
The investigation will be assisted by Strathmore RCMP, Calgary's major crimes unit and RCMP forensic identification specialists.
The death is being treated as suspicious but no further details will be available until an autopsy is completed early next week.
RCMP Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly said it appeared the person died recently. He says investigators are trying to determine what areas the facility serves.
The 122,000-square-foot facility officially opened in December 2012.
According to a company news release for the opening, it is one of three material recovery facilities BFI operates in Alberta. The other two are in Edmonton and Lethbridge.
