Elk Valley RCMP say a group of five skiers was in the backcountry near the Coal Mountain Teck Mine southeast of Sparwood when the avalanche hit shortly after 3 p.m. MT.
The Lethbridge man was buried but the other skiers were able to find and dig him out. He suffered a broken arm and bruises and showed signs of hypothermia.
Some snowmobilers who were in the area carried the man out. He was taken to hospital in Fernie and is expected to make a full recovery.
A heavy dump of snow late last week created dangerous avalanche conditions throughout southern B.C.
