Neil Young seemed playful but didn't mince words Monday night during a gig at New York's Carnegie Hall when he chewed out audience members during the first of a four-night stand for clapping "wrong."
Young had started the song "Ohio" when he quickly stopped the number, irked at those who were clapping a bit behind the beat. "Wrong!" Young reportedly said, according The New York Times.
"You're all not even, you're really late," Young is caught saying after stopping the song in the YouTube clip below at the 10-second mark.
Young then jokes about calling the musicians' union. "It's something that you probably don't know but there's a hell of a distance between you and me," he added. "Just another perspective on a happy crowd. Funny thing about music..."
Young carried on with the song from the two-set, 23-song performance at Carnegie Hall's Isaac Stern Auditorium. The show consisted of his own material, songs from Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young as well as a cover of Phil Ochs' "Changes."
Later on during the show Young reportedly replied to constant shouts for requests with a terse "You guys finished?"
The singer than looked up towards the balcony, adding "No, you paid real good money to get in here, so you should be able to listen to each other."
And near the show's homestretch the singer, 68, quipped the following: "Pretty soon I'm going to play my hit." Young proceeded to round out the night with "After The Gold Rush" and "Heart Of Gold" to close out the second set. An encore of "Comes A Time" and "Long May You Run" rounded out the night.
The New York shows precede a four-city "Honor The Treaties" Canadian tour with proceeds benefiting the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) Legal Defence Fund in their battle against oil companies and the government regarding the oil sands projects.
The tour will begin Jan.12 at Toronto's Massey Hall before stops in Winnipeg, Regina and Calgary to round out the trek. Diana Krall will be the support act on each of these benefit shows and 100 per cent of the proceeds will go directly to the ACFN.
A fundraiser currently sits on the tour's website with a goal of $75,000. The tour's raised $17,259 as of Wednesday morning from 300 backers.
Young released his last studio album Psychedelic Pill in 2012. He also released "Live At The Cellar Door" as part of his ongoing archive series in late 2013.
