VANCOUVER - A major fire has shut down a busy Vancouver intersection as crews battle a blaze in the eight-storey Hycroft Towers in the city's upscale south Granville district.

It appears to be centered on the seventh floor of the 61-year-old building on Granville Street between 15th and 16th avenues.

Firefighters upgraded their response to a third alarm shortly after they arrived just before 3 a.m., but believe most of the damage has been confined to a single condo unit.

They say the suite was vacant and under renovation at the time.

There's no word yet what sparked the flames in the 158-suite building that features interior murals by Canadian artist Lionel Thomas.

No injuries have been reported and the entire three-wing complex remains evacuated. (The Canadian Press, Global)
