Alberta flood victims living in a temporary housing project in Calgary have been given eviction notices.

According to the Calgary Sun, 28 households in the Great Plains housing project were told Monday to pack their things and be out by the end of the month.

The housing was built to shelter 700 people but provincial officials say the camp only had 70 residents at its peak after opening in October and now houses approximately 45, reports the Calgary Herald.

Cam Traynor, a spokesman for Alberta Municipal Affairs, told the Herald camp operating costs are pricey for the taxpayer.

“Our top priority was to temporarily accommodate people affected by the flood,” he said, “but cost is an issue.”

Global Calgary reports residents have been consulted on their options, including a move to the Saddlebrook temporary housing neighbourhood near High River.

“It may not be the best option for people from Calgary, but it is an option,” Traynor said.

Traynor told the Sun Saddlebrook could be shut down this coming spring but another camp in High River, Highwood Junction, will be built for long-term residency.
