Neighbours alerted police after they heard a man screaming for help in the dark. Three men drove off in one vehicle and were eventually arrested; RCMP say another suspect got away.
All four have been charged with kidnapping.
The incident comes on the heels of another foiled abduction attempt in Richmond last August of a man and his five-year-old son.
Joe Wang, who lives in the area where the latest incident took place, said he saw his street erupt into chaos on Tuesday morning.
Wang had moved to Richmond from Taiwan, attracted by Metro Vancouver's reputation for safety, but now he’s not so sure.
"Killing … kidnapping … gangster things … there's lots of dangerous things in Vancouver,” said Wang. “I don't think Vancouver is best city to live in the world."
Cpl. Stephanie Ashton of the Richmond RCMP says kidnapping is not something you see very often.
“It's a pretty serious charge to have laid against you … we do not have many cases of it ever," Ashton said.
The name of the victim in Tuesday's attack has not been released and police are still investigating.
