Executive director of Telefilm Canada, Carolle Brabant, said she's happy to see Quebecers are getting noticed.
"I think that it's something that we have ... the filmmakers have been able to come up with stories that are compelling," she said.
Canadians are celebrating the success of the film Dallas Buyer's Club, directed by Quebec filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée.
The movie, which inspired a standing ovation at its TIFF premiere, received a total of six nominations.
It's based on the true story of Ron Woodroof, a hard-partying, homophobic cowboy (played by Matthew McConaughey) who turns his life around after being diagnosed with HIV.
In a statement released after today’s announcement, Vallée welcomed the recognition.
"My collaborators and I have had an amazing time making this film ... Today we all share a collective sense of pride as we have had the opportunity to spotlight a part of history that's both beautiful and sometimes painful to remember, and been able to tell a story which has touched the hearts of many."
In addition to being nominated for best picture, the film's talent is up for best actor in a leading role (Matthew McConaughey), best supporting actor (Jared Leto), best original screenplay (Craig Borten & Melisa Wallack), best makeup and hairstyling.
Montrealer Martin Pensa is also nominated along with John Mac McMurphy for best film editing.
"It's unreal, it feels very unreal ... I'm super happy for sure: it's incredible," Pensa told The Canadian Press Thursday morning.
"I didn't know about the editing [nomination]. I called [Vallée to offer] my congratulations for best picture and the actors and the screenplay," Pensa added. "He had to tell me."
Montreal-based Arcade fire member William Butler also earned a nomination for his work with Toronto's Owen Pallett for their work on the original score of Spike Jonze's film Her.
Also among the Oscar contenders is Montreal-based Chris Lawrence, who served as computer graphics supervisor on Gravity. He shares in a nomination for the film's eye-popping visual effects.
The 86th Academy Awards will be held on March 2.
