RED DEER, Alta. - A central Alberta man has been sentenced to two years in jail for a cancer fraud scam that bilked three people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Kevin Sveinson, who is 58, was convicted Monday on four charges in Red Deer court.

His co-accused, 51-year-old Theresa Sutherland, was sentenced last month to 2 1/2 years in prison.

Court heard the pair scammed three people, including two seniors, in 2009 by claiming they needed money to go to work.

They also said one of them had cancer that required money for treatment.

The victims were partially "paid back" with stolen cheques.
