Emergency responders were called to the blaze at the home on 2 Deerpath Drive at around 2:32 a.m.
Salim Alidina, 59, was rescued by Guelph firefighters, but succumbed to his injuries at Guelph General Hospital.
His four family members in the fire managed to escape the burning home and were treated for undisclosed injuries. They are expected to be released from hospital.
The Guelph fire department reported that smoke alarms were working and alerted residents to the fire. They have estimated $350,000 in damage to the home.
Neighbours dropped by on Sunday afternoon to see the damage for themselves. When they arrived, they saw the charred remains of a street-facing garage and a pile of indistinguishable rubble on the driveway.
“I’m feeling pretty upset, sad for the family," said Arun Prasad, who lives down the street on Deerpath Drive.
“[I'm] kind of emotional just finding out the person that did pass away that I knew very well. I’m kind of devastated right now, and shocked that something like this happened in our neighbouhood.”
The Ontario Fire Marshal has completed its investigation of the fire, but says it might be some time before a formal cause for the blaze is determined.
