The current minimum wage is $10.24, where it has been since March 31, 2010. But workers’ rights groups and health-care professionals are calling for the base to be raised to $14 and be indexed with inflation.
The group says the minimum wage should be 10 per cent anove the poverty line — which stands at $23,000 a year, before taxes. The amount of $14 per hour is how much someone working 35 hours a week would have to make in order to be 10 per cent above that line.
An advisory panel will release recommendations Monday afternoon.
