Groundhog Day is almost here. And this year, we get the feeling that on February 2, most of us will be rooting for our rodent friends to not see their shadows, and therefore call for an early spring.
After all, it's been one of the colder winters in recent memory and the phrase "polar vortex" is now in our popular lexicon. This year, the groundhogs will also have to contend with the Super Bowl, which is taking place on the same day.
In Punxsutawney, Penn. home of Phil, arguably the most famous weather-predicting groundhog, organizers are still expecting a large crowd this Sunday.
"We’re the No. 1 event that day and the Super Bowl is No. 2 behind us," Ron Ploucha, Phil's handler, told the New Jersey Star-Ledger.
Although we're pretty sure Phil won't get a U.S. Air Force fly-by or a Bruno Mars half-time show. Don't worry, Phil's predictions will probably be done by noon, giving you plenty of time to return to the 435-hour long Super Bowl pre-game show.
In Canada, Wiarton, Ont.'s Willie will put his prediction powers to the test as well, but visitors will have to bundle up. Forecasters are predicting snow and a low of -11 for Sunday.
Both Phil and Willie predicted an early spring in 2013. We're certainly hoping that they repeat that forecast this year.
