The U of S suspended men's hockey coach Dave Adolph for two games after he made a homophobic slur in an internal email to players.

"I wanted everybody to know that this was a homophobic slur that wasn't something physical or sexual or anything that I'd been suspended for, it was inappropriate use of words," Adolph said in interview.

"The words that are often used in hockey, or in sports culture, need to change."

Adolph was directed by the university's human resources to read a prepared statement that he had written. He would not elaborate on the exact nature of the slur.

The slur came in an email to players. Adolph said that team uses a private chat system to discuss hockey matters.

He said that he regrets making the comment and has spoken to the team.

"I think that we can all learn from this," he said.

Adolph will miss the two games coming up this weekend at Credit Union Centre.
