UPDATE - Feb. 9, 2014: Marvin Benitez, 21, of Burnaby has been identified as the man found dead on the pathway. "Although a motive is yet to be confirmed this occurrence is not being considered a random incident and does not appear gang related. The cause of death, injuries and if there is any suspect information is not being released at this time," read an RCMP news release.

BURNABY, B.C. - Homicide investigators are probing the suspicious death of a man in Burnaby, B.C.

Cpl. Dominic Duchesneau with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says members have taken over the case.

Few details are available, but Duchesneau says a passer-by found the young man in cardiac arrest on a path near the Lougheed SkyTrain Station, not far from the boundary between northeastern Burnaby and Coquitlam.

The victim was discovered at about 7:30 Thursday night and was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.

Duchesneau says the investigation is in its early stages, a cause of death is not being released and police are trying to determine what happened on the well-travelled path, not far from a large shopping mall.

He is urging anyone who may have been in the area Thursday evening to speak with officers.
