You can find lots of words to describe Thursday's gold medal game between Canada and the United States in Olympic women's hockey: a clash of the titans, perhaps, or a battle among equals.

Just about anything would have been better than what former NHL star Mike Modano tweeted as Canada advanced to the final on Monday:

Modano, who won a silver medal with Team USA after losing 5-2 to Canada at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, was pilloried on Twitter for his comment.

For his part, Modano recognized that the tweet offended some people, though he didn't seem particularly sorry:

Seriously though, Mike, you call THIS a cat fight? This is brutality at its height:
