New TTC chair, cab rules on council agenda

Toronto city council is set to meet today. Among the topics on the agenda:

New TTC chair Council will elect one of their own to replace Karen Stintz, who is stepping aside to clear the way for her mayoral run. Councillors Josh Colle and Maria Augimeri are said to be interested in the job. Whoever wins will only hold the post until the October municipal election.

Alcohol rules during Olympics  Coun. Mike Layton's motion to allow bars to sell alcohol starting at 6 a.m. for the duration of the Sochi Games. The spirit of this motion is to allow businesses to cash in as people gather to watch the games, particularly the finals in men's and women's hockey.

New taxi rules A series of rule changes will go to council, including a $25 fee for passengers who vomit in the cab, the ability for drivers to ask for fares up front, and 290 new licences for wheelchair accessible cabs.

Social media use during election A motion calling for rules that would prohibit council members from using their official city social media accounts for campaign use. The spirit of this motion is to draw a clearer line between official city accounts for constituent use and accounts councillors use as they run for election.

Council increase giveback A motion put forward by Mayor Rob Ford calls on council members to give back the amount of their annual salary increase, which is currently indexed to the Consumer Price Index. His motion reads: "Members of Council should set the example and forgo their salary increase for the balance of the 2014 Council term in order to demonstrate a commitment to controlling expenditures."
