The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is investigating Hinchcliffe's death as a homicide.
"We are fortunate to provide to a grieving family some closure with the remains of Barry being found, but our ultimate goal is to solve this homicide," said IHIT Sgt. Adam MacIntosh.
In Sept. 2011, Vancouver police issued a missing person's report for Hinchcliffe.
At the time, they told reporters Hinchcliffe was last seen at about 7 p.m., PT leaving his Vancouver home in the 900 block Expo Boulevard, driving a grey Toyota Tacoma. Police believe he was on his way to Mission, B.C.
Police said Hincliffe's disappearance was uncharacteristic because he kept in regular contact with his family.
IHIT is not releasing a cause of death or commenting on motive.
