The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in after Calgary police shot and killed a man and sent a woman to hospital in critical condition.

At roughly 9:15 p.m. on Feb. 28, officers responded to a call of shots being fired in the 1400 block of Copperfield Boulevard S.E. They were alerted to a suspicious vehicle in the same area and followed it toward Deerfoot Trail and McKenzie Lake Boulevard S.E.

Officers had the vehicle pull over and at least one of the officers who approached the vehicle ended up firing at suspects in the car.

One man died on the scene and a woman was transported to hospital.

No officers were injured but details about what happened are limited as the ASIRT investigation is just beginning.

Southbound traffic on Deerfoot Trail is being diverted at McKenzie Towne.

There's no word yet on when that will be cleared up.
