CALGARY - A man is dead and a woman remains in hospital in critical condition after a police-involved shooting on a south Calgary freeway.

Police closed down a portion of the Deerfoot Trail after the shooting late Friday night.

Police say a pursuit started after shots were reportedly fired in the Copperfield area of the city.

A police helicopter began pursuing a vehicle and officers on the ground were able to stop it.

Details on what happened next haven't been released but at some point officers opened fire on the vehicle and its occupants.

Police won't say if the two people involved were known to them, nor could they comment if drugs or alcohol were involved.

No officers were hurt in the confrontation.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to investigate, as is standard protocol in all officer-related shootings.
