Toronto’s mayor will go to Sunday night’s Academy Awards and will make an appearance on Monday's Jimmy Kimmel show, according to a Toronto Sun article.
“I am going to the Oscars. It’s going to be fun,” Ford reportedly told the Sun while boarding a plane headed to Los Angeles on Saturday.
UPDATE: Rob Ford’s brother, Coun. Doug Ford, told CP24 the mayor would not attend the Oscars, but would probably attend some after parties. CP24’s Katie Simpson tweeted Doug Ford said they “may be attending the red carpet portion of the evening,” but are unsure.
UPDATE #2:Toronto Mayor Rob Ford won’t attend Sunday’s Academy Awards show or walk the red carpet due to “heavy security,” Coun. Doug Ford told the Toronto Sun.
Before the report surfaced, Ford tweeted a photo of himself waiting for a flight at Chicago O'Hare International Airport.
The report comes just days after the controversial mayor, made internationally famous by last year's crack video scandal, insisted he’s not a celebrity.
“I don’t like being called an international celebrity. If the late-night shows want to make fun of me, that’s their job, let them make fun of me,” he said in a recent installment of his Ford Nation YouTube show.
On Saturday, when talking about his Jimmy Kimmel appearance, Ford told the Sun he is looking forward to promoting Toronto on the world stage.
Predictably, in response to Ford’s Oscars news, Twitter did what it does best: poked fun.
