Tim Moen is running for the Libertarian Party in Fort McMurray—Athabasca and this is his platform.
The Libertarian Party of Canada favours the elimination of government interference in the lives of citizens. The party has never elected a single representative to the House of Commons and has never received more than 0.25 per cent of the popular vote. Nevertheless, Moen wants to give it a shot.
So far, his meme-based campaign is getting plenty of attention on social media, despite the fact that some of his ideas are definitely on the far-fringes of the political spectrum.
The seat for Fort McMurray—Athabasca opened up after the surprise resignation of Conservative MP Brian Jean in January. Soon after stepping down, Jean denounced the speed of development in the oilsands region in which For McMurray is the centre. He argued that infrastructure is not keeping pace with the rapid growth in the riding.
A byelection has yet to be called and chief government whip and Vancouver Island North MP John Duncan is currently overseeing the constituency. The earliest possible date for the election would be March 24, but will likely take place at a later date.
The riding has been held by the Conservative Party or its precursors since it was created in 1968. But Moen thinks his platform, with ideas drawn from the left and right, will appeal to voters.
“The memes show we care about issues the left likes and issues associated with the right. It doesn’t have to be one or the other,” Moen told Fort McMurray Today. “You don’t have to stay in one group. It’s not about left versus right. It’s about bringing a message of hope.”
