VERNON, B.C. - RCMP say a 34-year-old North Okanagan, B.C. man has died in hospital after being caught in an avalanche while snowmobiling near Vernon.

Mounties and search and rescue crews were dispatched to the avalanche site near the Keefer Lake resort Saturday afternoon.

Police say the man had been snowmobiling with five friends in the area when he was caught in the slide.

Officers say he was buried in several meters of snow and was dug out by friends and other rescuers.

Gordon Molendyk, of the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP detachment, says emergency crews at the resort helped pull the man out.

He says the man, whose name hasn't been released, was treated by paramedics then airlifted to Kelowna General Hospital.

The BC Coroners Service is now investigating.
