ELK ISLAND NATIONAL PARK, Alta. - Parks Canada says another 83 bison from Elk Island National Park near Edmonton are hoofing it to Montana.

It's the third transfer of bison to the American Prairie Reserve south of the border.

In 1906, the last large herd of wild bison on the Montana plains was purchased by Canada and their descendents live in the national park.

Tens of millions of bison once roamed the Great Plains.

In 2012 there were about 500,000 remaining in North America

The transfer is to take place later this week.
