It's a heartbreaking story.
Over the weekend, residents of the Cape Ray area discovered that roughly 30-40 animals are confined in ice that has been blown close to shore by strong winds. As the ice has moved closer to land, the amount of open water has decreased.
Graphic photos and video of the desperate porpoises struggling to escape the blood-reddened water were posted online over the weekend and led many to contact Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Sadly, there is likely little the government can do to help.
Cape Ray's Bert Osmond, who snapped photos of the scene, told CBC he doubts the animals survived the freezing temperatures Sunday night.
Resident Tommy Anderson told The Telegram he doesn't think the government would be able to clear an escape route.
"The ice is in, and as far as you can see there’s nothing but ice," he said. "You can hear the sounds that they’re making -- talking to each other."
