OTTAWA - A quick look at Greg Rickford, appointed natural resources minister Wednesday by Prime Minister Stephen Harper:

Born: Paris, Ont., Sept. 24, 1967. Age 46.

Education: Degrees in common and civil law from McGill University; MBA from Laval University; nursing diploma from Mohawk College, BSc in nursing from the University of Victoria.

Career: Worked as a nurse and lawyer in remote First Nations communities in northwestern Ontario.

Politics: Conservative candidate in Kenora 2008 federal election. Won. Re-elected 2011. Named parliamentary secretary for official languages August 2010, named parliamentary secretary to the minister of what is now Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. January 2011. Appointed minister of state for science and technology and economic development in northern Ontario July 2013. Appointed minister of natural resources March 19, 2014.

Personal: He and wife Janet have a daughter, Abigail Mae.
