FREDERICTON - Veteran New Brunswick Progressive Conservative John Betts says he will not run in September's election.

In a letter released by a provincial government spokesman, the 65-year-old Betts says it's simply time to retire after 28-years as a teacher and 28-years as an elected politician.

Betts was a Moncton city councillor for 13 years before being elected in 1999 to represent the provincial riding of Moncton-Crescent.

He served as Tory caucus chairman for four years.

The election is set for September 22.
