Speaker says committee should examine contempt accusation against Tory first

TORONTO - Ontario Speaker Dave Levac says the Liberals jumped the gun when they asked him to decide whether contempt proceedings against a Conservative can go ahead.

He says the matter was "prematurely brought to the attention" of the legislature and should be examined by a committee.

The Liberals say Tory Vic Fedeli released documents about cancelled gas plants that they say contained sensitive business data the Opposition had agreed to keep secret.

They complain that Fedeli was aware the information he disclosed was contained in a commercially sensitive document that was confidential to the committee.

Fedeli says the Liberals lied to taxpayers about the budget and now they are running scared, and have decided to come after him personally.
