At East Vancouver's Mega Ill cafe, consumers can order pizza with a special extra topping: marijuana.
If patrons are over 18 and have a medical exemption that allows them to smoke legally, they can have oil extracted from pot drizzled onto their pizza, reports CBC News. The add-on costs $10.
Owned by Mark and Stephen Klokeid, Mega Ill is Vancouver's first pizzeria-vapour lounge, Vancouver Observer reports. Stephen Klokeid is a medical marijuana user.
"There's already vapour lounges and other lounges around town," Mark Klokeid told CTV News. "So I figured, why not match that with pizza?"
A YouTube video posted last month shows the pizza being made from scratch. The oil extract is drizzled on the pizza before it goes into the oven, a Vancouver Sun video shows.
The hemp heart pies are served in a "pot-friendly environment," the cafe's website states. Each patron has to bring their own cannabis into the cafe, but CTV News reports vaporizers are available to rent on-site.
Mega Ill might not be able to serve the weed pizza forever, though.
The federal government's revamped medical marijuana regulations officially come into effect on Tuesday.
An injunction issued earlier this month by a B.C. judge exempts patients who are licensed to possess or grow medical pot, either for themselves or someone else, from new laws that would make it illegal. Still, this provision only lasts until the constitutional rights case, led by a group of patients, goes to trial.
"We'll still be open regardless. We just might not be able to infuse the pizzas anymore," Mega Ill employee Anthony Risling told CBC News.
"But we will still be open as a pizza place where people can come and medicate here."
A trial for the case that challenges the new personal grow-op laws has not been scheduled, but it is expected to happen within the next nine to 12 months.
