FREDERICTON - A report on the size of the New Brunswick government says the number of civil servants fell by 584 positions at the end of last year compared to a year earlier.

The province had 45,567 employees at the end of last year.

The government says the reduction was due to retirements or the elimination of vacant positions.

The province says it is the third year in a row the number of positions in the public service has declined.

The report says that since 2010, the size of the government has been reduced by 1,845 positions.
