A hockey dad from Burnaby, B.C. has been charged with threatening a 10-year-old player on his son's team.
The incident allegedly happened in the dressing room at the Karen Magnussen Arena after the boys' Atom 3 team lost a playoff game in February, according to the RCMP.
"I can't comment what exactly he said to the youth but it falls under the charge of uttering a threat," North Vancouver RCMP Cpl. Richard De Jong told The Huffington Post B.C.
Tempers flared after the Burnaby team's loss to a North Vancouver team, reported The Province.
De Jong said the boy was "definitely shaken up."
Terry Litt, 57, turned himself in and appeared in a North Vancouver courtroom on Tuesday, CBC News reported.
"It's very unusual for an adult to be charged with uttering threats against a 10-year-old, especially in a sporting environment where the adults usually take on the role of being a role model," said De Jong.
The maximum penalty for a summary conviction of uttering threats is 18 months in jail, while a minimum sentence usually involves probation and anger management.
Litt was immediately suspended from the Burnaby Winter Club, but he then quit anyway, manager Len McNeely told the Burnaby NewsLeader.
Parent Domenic Palmieri told the newspaper that the atmosphere around the team had been difficult all season.
