Jordan Segura worked at a funeral home, and now his professional colleagues are planning his service.
Segura, 23, was one of five victims in a series of fatal stabbings at an end-of-year house party in Calgary's northwest area on Tuesday.
He was completing his third year toward a BA in religious studies at the University of Calgary and was a member of Gnosis, a club for students in the program. He also had a passion for music that he channeled into a gig with a local band, said a news release from the school.
Segura had previously attended Mount Royal University, which will hold a memorial service on Thursday at noon, CTV News reported.
He was considering a career in funeral services and had worked for McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes last summer, reports the Calgary Herald.
The company offered to keep him on and teach him about the industry, but he opted to go back to school instead. He was set to work for them full-time this summer.
"He understood how to serve people, which is very important. He was very good to families," Ernie Hagel, McInnis & Holloway's president, told the newspaper.
The company is now preparing a service for him, CBC producer Laurie Allan tweeted.
Miryam Segura, Jordan's grandmother, described him as a quiet and respectable young man in an interview with The Calgary Sun.
His cousin Monica Segura said he had a "heart of gold and a passion for life and knowledge," and that he could light up a room, Metro News reported.
Segura was born in Edmonton but later moved to Calgary. His father, who works in the United States, is one of a number of relatives who will travel to Calgary.
