This big announcement from the Clintons had nothing to do with politics for a change — Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is pregnant.
The 34 year old, who is a director at IAC, as well as a board member of the Clinton Foundation, the School of American Ballet, Common Sense Media and the Weill Cornell Medical College, had previously told Glamour magazine 2014 would be the "year of the baby" for her and her husband, Marc Mezvinsky.
Clinton made the announcement on Thursday alongside her mother, who is believed to be a potential candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination for 2016, while speaking in New York City as part of the "Girls: No Ceilings Conversation" series at the Lower Eastside Girls Club. According to Politico, she tied the announcement into her speech:
“Marc and I are very excited that we have our first child arriving later this year and I certainly feel all the better, whether it’s a girl or a boy, that she or he will grow up in a world full of so many strong young female leaders, so thank you for inspiring me and thank you for inspiring future generations including the one that we’ll be lucky enough to welcome into our family later this year. I just hope that I will be as good a mom to my child, and hopefully children, as my mom was to me.”
Both of Clinton's parents have expressed a desire for a grandchild in the past, and will undoubtedly be proud grandparents (whether they're in the White House or not).
“I will certainly tell you, that’s a title I would be proud to have,” Hillary told ABC News' Reena Ninan last year.
Meanwhile, Bill has been hoping for the role for even longer — and knows it will be good for everyone.
“I’d like to live, I’d like to be a grandfather,” added former President Bill Clinton in 2011. “I would like to have a happy wife and she won’t be unless she’s a grandmother.”
A due date for the baby has not been released.
