Surrey Parade Draws 240,000 People

The rain partly held off as more than 240,000 people took in the annual Vaisakhi parade in Surrey, B.C., which celebrated the start of the new year and one of the most important events on the Sikh calendar.

Organizers called Saturday's turnout the largest crowd in the 13-year-history of the Surrey Khalsa Day parade, making it one of the largest Vaisaikhi gatherings in the world, outside of India.

Colourful floats, live music and free food provided by local businesses and community groups filled the day.

Vaisakhi marks the beginning of harvest season, and also recognizes the creation of Khalsa, the heart of Sikhism, more than 300 years ago.
