PHOTOS: Herb Gray's Life In Politics

Herb Gray spent nearly four decades in politics before he was pronounced dead on Monday, at 82.

The former Liberal MP from Windsor, Ont. was first elected to the riding of Essex West in 1962. He was re-elected to that riding twice more before serving as the MP for Windsor West from 1968 to 2002.

Gray held many portfolios while in office, overseeing areas such as national revenue, industry, trade and the Treasury Board.

He was leader of the opposition Liberals in the House of Commons from 1984 to 1990. He served as acting party leader for 10 months in 1990 before future prime minister Jean Chretien took over the job.

Gray continued to occupy important cabinet roles after the Liberals won a majority government in 1993. He was solicitor-general from 1993 to 1997 and was later appointed as Chretien's deputy prime minister, serving in the role until he left politics in 2002.

His 39 years in Canadian politics spanned the prime ministerial tenures of John Diefenbaker, Lester B. Pearson and Pierre Trudeau. He ranks as the third-longest serving MP in Canadian history, after former prime minister Wilfrid Laurier and John Haggart.
