The next time the words "gay," "no homo," or "bitch," slip out of your mouth, take a second to think about what you're actually saying.
An in-your-face campaign from Duke University, in collaboration with student organizations Think Before You Talk and Blue Devils United, has students trying to put an end to the misuse of language that relates to the LGBTQ community and gender.
Interchanging "gay" and "stupid" is one example the group addresses, along with using "bitch" and "pussy" to describe people as weak or insecure. The group also painted a local bridge, urging students to use caution against words like "rape" and "retarded."
According to the campaign's Facebook page, the goal is to create dialogue on the intersection of language, and gender and sexual identities.
Since university campuses are great spaces to raise awareness for a cause, this campaign also reminds us of a feminism photo series that came out of McGill university in March.
