Tory Senator Doesn't Understand How Parliament Works

Conservative Senator Don Meredith doesn't seem to understand how Parliament works.

Except no, it won't. Not yet, anyway.

The bill still has to go through the House of Commons before Lincoln Alexander Day becomes official. Meredith's bill has only made its way through a third reading in the Senate.

This isn't the first time a politician has tried to set aside a day to recognize Canada's first black MP and federal cabinet minister.

On Dec. 9, 2013, NDP MP Chris Charlton moved a bill in the House of Commons to mark Lincoln Alexander Day on Jan. 21, his birthday. The Conservatives denied it and, according to her, Meredith introduced his bill three hours later.

So what does she think of the senator's motion?

"Clearly, he doesn't understand the legislative process. So his doctorate is probably not in political science," Charlton told The Huffington Post Canada.

Sources tell HuffPost Canada that the government supports Meredith's bill. It is expected to pass the Commons with the support of all parties.
