The black-capped chickadee is officially king of the nest.

After a heated race, Vancouver's City Bird competition drew to a close on Saturday with the chickadee emerging as the winner.

Over 704,000 votes were cast online, meaning more Vancouverites voted in the bird "election" than in the last civic election.

The competition got so fierce, in fact, that Twitter accounts started popping up for the various birds. But don't worry, the winning birdie isn't a flight risk.

The black-capped chickadee was up against five other city birds, including the pileated woodpecker and the varied thrush. It won with 277,924 of the votes (39 per cent) and will be used in promotional material for Bird Week 2015.
