A Female Boss At A National Canadian Newspaper? That's New
Postmedia

For the first time in history, a woman will hold the top editorial position at a national Canadian newspaper.

Anne Marie Owens has been appointed as editor of the National Post newspaper.

Owens will return to the newspaper from her role as deputy editor at Maclean’s magazine. She begins the new role June 9.

Owens was one of the newspaper’s first reporters when it was founded in 1998 and cycled through various management positions before leaving for Maclean’s.

“Anne Marie brings with her strong journalistic skills and ethics, and a broad understanding of national issues,” said Lou Clancy, senior vice-president of content at Postmedia.

“As a ‘day-oner’, she has a deep understanding of the Post's mission and standards.”

Owens takes the reins from Stephen Meurice, who left abruptly in March after heading up the newspaper since 2010.

It is part of an industry-wide shakeup in Canadian newspapers, which also saw the departure of editor-in-chiefs at the Globe and Mail and The Canadian Press.
