MLA Ric McIver files papers, pays balance of $50K to join Alberta PC race

CALGARY - Calgary MLA Ric McIver has filed his nomination papers with Alberta's Progressive Conservative party to become the second official candidate in its leadership race.

McIver dropped off 500 signatures from party members and paid the balance of a $50,000 non-refundable deposit.

He joins former Calgary MP Jim Prentice as the second official candidate in the contest to replace former premier Alison Redford.

Edmonton MLA Thomas Lukaszuk (loo-KAH'-zuhk) is still collecting signatures and has until Friday to do so.

The candidates are to be officially introduced at a party event in Edmonton on June 2.

Party members will vote for the new leader in September.
